Balance
Swiss design language and Brazilian joie de vivre. «Arabesque» was designed by Frédéric Dedelley for the residence of the Swiss consul in Rio de Janeiro.
With its expressive composition of contrasting colors and graphic rhythm, «Arabesque» references the iconic Copacabana beachfront promenade, designed by the legendary landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx.

- Virgin wool
Origin: New Zealand, Europe, Switzerland
Hardly any natural fiber combines functionality and sensuality as naturally as wool. Its special quality lies in the structure of the fiber itself. Virgin wool consists of keratin, has a natural crimp, and forms fine air chambers that store heat while also regulating temperature. This creates the characteristic coziness that has distinguished wool carpets for generations. At the same time, wool can absorb moisture from the environment and release it again without feeling damp—a property that noticeably improves the indoor climate.
In interior design, virgin wool exudes a special calm. Its surface appears soft and lively at the same time, colors look deep and nuanced, and light is gently absorbed. Especially in architecture characterized by hard floors, stone, glass, or concrete, wool creates an atmospheric counterpoint. When laid wall-to-wall, it significantly improves room acoustics; used as a fitted carpet, it can calm spaces afterward and define different zones. Wool is naturally dirt-repellent, flame-resistant, and exceptionally durable.
Ruckstuhl uses only carefully selected, mulesing-free virgin wool. What matters is not only the origin but also the quality of each fiber: length, elasticity, and purity determine how durable and high-quality a carpet remains over decades.
Benefits:
- Virgin wool is a natural and renewable raw material.
- Virgin wool balances indoor climate as it can absorb up to about 30% of its own weight in moisture without feeling damp.
- Virgin wool regulates temperature and provides comfortable coziness – warming in winter and balancing in summer.
- Virgin wool improves room acoustics and significantly reduces impact noise and echo.
- Virgin wool is durable and elastic; the fibers largely straighten up again after being stressed.
- Virgin wool repels dirt due to the natural lanolin in the wool.
- Virgin wool is electrostatically neutral and binds dust from the indoor air.
- Virgin wool is flame retardant and therefore also suitable for demanding commercial areas.
- Virgin wool enhances comfort and quality of stay on hard floors afterwards.
Facts:
- Sheep produce about 2–10 kg of raw wool annually, depending on the breed.
- Wool has been used as a textile fiber for over 10,000 years and is one of humanity's oldest cultivated fibers.
- High-quality virgin wool contains a natural fat content (lanolin) that partially repels dirt and liquids.
- Around 1.1–1.2 million tons of sheep wool are produced worldwide each year. The main producers include China, Australia, and New Zealand.
- The fineness of wool varies by origin, ranging from about 15 to over 40 microns.
The designer was born on April 4, 1964, in Fribourg and grew up in an environment strongly influenced by architecture: his parents ran an architectural firm, and he developed an early sensitivity to shapes, spaces, and materials. His initial enthusiasm was for automotive design, inspired by figures such as Pininfarina and Giorgetto Giugiaro.
A decisive turning point came through the radical designs of the Memphis Group and the postmodern furniture by Trix and Robert Haussmann. This encounter fundamentally changed his perspective on design and led him to furniture design.
He began his education at the École cantonale d’art de Lausanne (ECAL), where he received thorough training in the tradition of Swiss "Good Form." To engage more with international trends, he later transferred to the Art Center College of Design (Europe). A semester abroad in Los Angeles particularly influenced him, as he experienced a more communicative and market-oriented design culture there. Both influences—the Swiss precision and the international openness—continue to shape his working approach.
After graduating in Product Design, he moved to Paris, where he initially worked in the circle of designer Andrée Putman and was involved with the Anatome agency on the Louvre's signage project. He gained further formative experience in San Francisco, where he was fascinated by the cultural mix of Western and Asian influences.
In 1995, he finally opened his own studio in Zurich. Since then, he has mainly worked in furniture design, interior architecture, and exhibition design. For him, design is an interplay of form, function, material, construction, and emotion—elements weighted differently depending on the project. In parallel, he pursues experimental projects that follow his personal artistic interests.
The cleaning instructions “Cleaning and Care of Tufted Wool Carpets” apply to this product.
In tufted wool carpets, the pile yarns are inserted into a backing material and structurally fixed on the reverse side. Depending on the product, a cut velvet, a loop structure, or a combination of both is created. Wool offers good elasticity and natural di...
