Art Rugs sees itself as a platform for textile editions with cultural significance. Together with artists, designers, galleries, publishers, and creative practitioners, Ruckstuhl develops rugs that go far beyond conventional floor coverings—as editions, collectors’ objects, or spatial interventions.
Some series are created on its own initiative, while others are commissioned by artists, institutions, or curatorial contexts. Every edition begins with an idea: a drawing, a material experiment, a spatial vision, or an artistic gesture to be translated into textile shape. Ruckstuhl accompanies this process from the first sketch to the finished object—with the savoir-faire of a Swiss workshop since 1881.
The possibilities range from traditional weaving techniques to state-of-the-art manufacturing methods such as precise Robot-Tufting. Different pile heights, relief-like structures, complex colour gradients, multidimensional surfaces, and graphically precise linework can be implemented with technological precision. Even sophisticated bespoke developments—from complex contours to large-format installations—can be realised in a way that is appropriate to the material.
A particular focus lies on colour development. Custom colours based on samples, individual nuances, and specific colour moods can be developed specially to give an edition its unmistakable identity. Materiality, construction, colour, and tactility are not considered in isolation, but understood as integral components of the artistic expression.
