The earliest evidence of the use of wool dates back to the 9th–7th millennium BC, when people in the so-called Fertile Crescent (modern-day Turkey, Iran, Iraq, and Syria) began domesticating sheep. Initially, sheep were primarily kept for meat, milk, and hides—the animals still resembled hairy wild sheep more than today’s wool sheep. Wool culture as such likely developed around 6000 BC, when people began selectively breeding sheep for denser, woollier coats. Archaeological finds of wool fibers from present-day Iran date to the 6th millennium BC and are among the earliest known evidence of textile wool use.

Today, New Zealand is one of the most important producers of high-quality wool. On vast pastures and under ideal climatic conditions, fibers are produced that are valued for their purity, durability, and natural softness.

Hardly any natural fiber combines functionality and sensuality as naturally as wool. Its special quality lies in the structure of the fiber itself. Virgin wool consists of keratin, has a natural crimp, and forms fine air chambers that store heat while also regulating temperature. Vacuum regularly with a suitable carpet nozzle or brush. Initial pilling is characteristic of the material. Blot stains immediately and follow the wool-care instructions when carrying out deep cleaning.
