Museum of East Asian Art Cologne

Cologne · 1977

Cologne is home to the oldest museum of East Asian art in all of Europe. Founded in 1909, the museum displays precious artworks from China, Korea, and Japan. But it’s not just the art—the museum building, opened in 1977, is also worth a visit. It was designed by Kunio Moekawa, a student of Le Corbusier.

Coir meets culture

For the museum, a new carpet was sought for the special exhibition rooms as part of a renovation for barrier-free access. The natural CALICUT coconut carpet met all the desired requirements, especially those of monument preservation. Ruckstuhl was allowed to supply about 1000 m2 of this carpet, which has been in the range since the 1960s; a timeless classic that also meets the demands of a public space. The measures were implemented under the direction of the Cologne architectural firm Planteam MEGARON in cooperation with the cultural department of the City of Cologne.
