Robot-Tufting – Technology in the Service of People and Craftsmanship
Since 2009, Ruckstuhl has manufactured some of its rugs using Robot-Tufting. What was technologically pioneering at the time is now a precisely controlled process that reduces physically demanding work while opening up design possibilities that go far beyond the mere automation of tufting.

Workshop also means continuous development

In classic hand tufting, a person guides a tufting gun line by line across a vertically stretched backing fabric. This work places a constantly repeating physical strain on the hands, arms, shoulders and back for hours.

A workshop preserves not only what it has mastered, but also continues to develop processes, knowledge and tools. For Ruckstuhl, craftsmanship is measured by an understanding of the material, mastery of the manufacturing process and the care taken to choose the most suitable technique for each task.

In classic hand tufting, a person guides a tufting gun line by line across a vertically stretched backing fabric. On large surfaces, this work also places a strain on the hands, arms, shoulders and back that recurs over many hours. A solid-colour rug measuring three by four metres already covers twelve square metres, across which the same movement must be performed row by row.

In Sweden, where the ergonomic strain caused by hand-operated machines was examined intensively at an early stage, automated tufting technology was developed. In 2009, Ruckstuhl decided to integrate this comparatively young process into its workshop in Langenthal. At the time, control systems, precision and digital data processing were still far from today's capabilities, so the decision was not merely an investment in a machine, but above all an investment in its own expertise.

Precision doesn’t happen by itself

Over the years, the interplay of yarn, backing material, machine and design has been continuously refined. Today, Robot-Tufting achieves a textile quality that is at least equal to high-quality hand-tufting and offers advantages wherever precise lines, even surfaces and reproducible results are essential.

This does not diminish the importance of human work; rather, it shifts it to those stages of the process where experience remains truly indispensable: selecting and assessing yarns, determining pile height and density, coordinating colours and surfaces, and carrying out ongoing quality control. The robot takes over the repetitive movement, while textile expertise determines the process.

This precision is particularly valuable for series or designs that are reproduced in different dimensions over many years. While a hand-tufted rug naturally bears the individual signature of the person who made it, Robot-Tufting makes it possible to reproduce a design defined once with a high degree of design consistency.

From Design to Textile Information

The true strength of the process at Ruckstuhl begins long before tufting. The production data is created in-house in Langenthal, where designs are not merely digitized but interpreted and prepared for the textile product. Lines are translated into movement paths, surfaces are assigned specific parameters, transitions are defined, and different pile heights or densities are arranged so that a precise textile surface can emerge from a two-dimensional drawing.

This process is particularly evident in the COLLECTION TRIX & ROBERT HAUSSMANN by Ruckstuhl. The graphic clarity and spatial impact of these designs demand an exact translation into yarn and pile. The production drawings and data sets developed for this purpose constitute a body of knowledge that remains with Ruckstuhl, making it possible to reproduce a design years later according to the same design logic.

The value of robot tufting therefore lies not only in the machine, but equally in the expertise required to master it. The technology becomes the tool of a workshop whose quality arises from the interplay of material knowledge, design, digital precision, and craftsmanship.

At Ruckstuhl, looms that are decades old and digitally controlled systems naturally work side by side. The value of a tool is determined not by its age, but by the task it can be used to solve.

Robot-Tufting therefore stands neither for the replacement of craftsmanship nor for automation as an end in itself. It represents a conscious decision to reduce repetitive physical work, while increasing precision and opening up creative possibilities that would hardly be conceivable without combining textile expertise with digital technology.
