Dégradé
DÉGRADÉ was created in 1990 as part of a Swiss rug edition, for which selected architects and interior designers developed their own designs. Trix and Robert Haussmann designed two very different rugs for this: DÉGRADÉ and STRIPES.
DÉGRADÉ is a free, motif-based design. At its center is a technically sophisticated color effect that connects to Robert Haussmann’s engagement with color theories. At the same time, the rug refers to those design works in which Haussmann explored the possibilities of different materials and textile manufacturing techniques.
Ruckstuhl brings this design into the present and combines a piece of Swiss design history with forward-looking material innovation: The COLLECTION TRIX & ROBERT HAUSSMANN is the world’s first rug collection whose upper layer is made of 60% recycled wool – sourced from no longer worn garments, such as high-quality winter coats.

- Virgin wool
origin: New Zealand, Europe, Switzerland
Hardly any natural fiber combines functionality and sensuality as naturally as wool. Its special quality lies in the structure of the fiber itself. Virgin wool consists of keratin, has a natural crimp, and forms fine air chambers that store heat while also regulating temperature. This creates the characteristic coziness that has distinguished wool carpets for generations. At the same time, wool can absorb moisture from the environment and release it again without feeling damp—a property that noticeably improves the indoor climate.
In interior design, virgin wool exudes a special calm. Its surface appears soft and lively at the same time, colors look deep and nuanced, and light is gently absorbed. Especially in architecture characterized by hard floors, stone, glass, or concrete, wool creates an atmospheric counterpoint. When laid wall-to-wall, it significantly improves room acoustics; used as a fitted carpet, it can calm spaces afterward and define different zones. Wool is naturally dirt-repellent, flame-resistant, and exceptionally durable.
Ruckstuhl uses only carefully selected, mulesing-free virgin wool. What matters is not only the origin but also the quality of each fiber: length, elasticity, and purity determine how durable and high-quality a carpet remains over decades.
Benefits:
- Virgin wool is a natural and renewable raw material.
- Virgin wool balances indoor climate as it can absorb up to about 30% of its own weight in moisture without feeling damp.
- Virgin wool regulates temperature and provides comfortable coziness – warming in winter and balancing in summer.
- Virgin wool improves room acoustics and significantly reduces impact noise and echo.
- Virgin wool is durable and elastic; the fibers largely straighten up again after being stressed.
- Virgin wool repels dirt due to the natural lanolin in the wool.
- Virgin wool is electrostatically neutral and binds dust from the indoor air.
- Virgin wool is flame retardant and therefore also suitable for demanding commercial areas.
- Virgin wool enhances comfort and quality of stay on hard floors afterwards.
Facts:
- Sheep produce about 2–10 kg of raw wool annually, depending on the breed.
- Wool has been used as a textile fiber for over 10,000 years and is one of humanity's oldest cultivated fibers.
- High-quality virgin wool contains a natural fat content (lanolin) that partially repels dirt and liquids.
- Around 1.1–1.2 million tons of sheep wool are produced worldwide each year. The main producers include China, Australia, and New Zealand.
- The fineness of wool varies by origin, ranging from about 15 to over 40 microns.
Trix (*1933) and Robert Haussmann (*1931; †2021) are among the influential figures in the Swiss architecture and design scene. With their Manierismo Critico – the critical questioning of the familiar – they broke design and architectural conventions through playful seriousness and subtle humor, leaving lasting marks. Their works play with perception, surprise, and challenge the senses.
We have now transferred these works into the new COLLECTION TRIX & ROBERT HAUSSMANN by Ruckstuhl in close collaboration with Trix Haussmann. The designs were personally curated by her to authentically preserve and make the design principles and creative depth of this visionary duo newly accessible.

The cleaning instructions “Cleaning and Care of Tufted Wool Carpets” apply to this product.
In tufted wool carpets, the pile yarns are inserted into a backing material and structurally fixed on the reverse side. Depending on the product, a cut velvet, a loop structure, or a combination of both is created. Wool offers good elasticity and natural di...
