Feltro Trend

Ruckstuhl Work Design

FELTRO is felt in its most immediate form: compressed virgin wool, reduced to material, surface, and colour. The rug forgoes a woven structure and gains its special presence precisely because of this – calm, archaic, and at the same time naturally contemporary.

As wool felt, FELTRO brings a warm, textile density into the room. The surface appears soft and clear at the same time; it holds back without becoming arbitrary. In Feltro Basic, the material reveals itself in its original, natural form. Feltro Color expands this calm with gentle colour tones, while Feltro Trend sets stronger accents with a fresher palette.

Ruckstuhl produces FELTRO from pure virgin wool – as a rug for spaces where materiality, colour, and reduction speak their own language.

origin: New Zealand, Europe, Switzerland

Hardly any natural fiber combines functionality and sensuality as naturally as wool. Its special quality lies in the structure of the fiber itself. Virgin wool consists of keratin, has a natural crimp, and forms fine air chambers that store heat while also regulating temperature. This creates the characteristic coziness that has distinguished wool carpets for generations. At the same time, wool can absorb moisture from the environment and release it again without feeling damp—a property that noticeably improves the indoor climate.

In interior design, virgin wool exudes a special calm. Its surface appears soft and lively at the same time, colors look deep and nuanced, and light is gently absorbed. Especially in architecture characterized by hard floors, stone, glass, or concrete, wool creates an atmospheric counterpoint. When laid wall-to-wall, it significantly improves room acoustics; used as a fitted carpet, it can calm spaces afterward and define different zones. Wool is naturally dirt-repellent, flame-resistant, and exceptionally durable.

Ruckstuhl uses only carefully selected, mulesing-free virgin wool. What matters is not only the origin but also the quality of each fiber: length, elasticity, and purity determine how durable and high-quality a carpet remains over decades.

Benefits:

  • Virgin wool is a natural and renewable raw material.
  • Virgin wool balances indoor climate as it can absorb up to about 30% of its own weight in moisture without feeling damp.
  • Virgin wool regulates temperature and provides comfortable coziness – warming in winter and balancing in summer.
  • Virgin wool improves room acoustics and significantly reduces impact noise and echo.
  • Virgin wool is durable and elastic; the fibers largely straighten up again after being stressed.
  • Virgin wool repels dirt due to the natural lanolin in the wool.
  • Virgin wool is electrostatically neutral and binds dust from the indoor air.
  • Virgin wool is flame retardant and therefore also suitable for demanding commercial areas.
  • Virgin wool enhances comfort and quality of stay on hard floors afterwards.

Facts:

  • Sheep produce about 2–10 kg of raw wool annually, depending on the breed.
  • Wool has been used as a textile fiber for over 10,000 years and is one of humanity's oldest cultivated fibers.
  • High-quality virgin wool contains a natural fat content (lanolin) that partially repels dirt and liquids.
  • Around 1.1–1.2 million tons of sheep wool are produced worldwide each year. The main producers include China, Australia, and New Zealand.
  • The fineness of wool varies by origin, ranging from about 15 to over 40 microns.

Workshop designs emerge where material knowledge meets spatial thinking. They express a design culture shaped not primarily by a single author, but by the collective knowledge of our workshop.

Since 1881, Ruckstuhl has developed rugs at the intersection of architecture, craftsmanship and technical innovation. Some products arise from functional requirements, others from a deep understanding of natural fibres, constructions or manufacturing processes. What they share is a precise approach: durable, true to the material and free from short-lived trends.

Ruckstuhl Werkentwurf stands for rugs conceived from within the workshop — developed through experience, refined over time and made for generations.

The cleaning instructions “Cleaning and Care of Wool Felt Carpets” apply to this product.

Wool felt is created through the controlled felting of wool fibers. The material has a dense, compact surface and a characteristic, slightly lively fiber texture. Depending on the construction, the rug can consist of felt sheets, felt strips, or a combinati...
