Environmental Hangover é a imagem de um planeta após o excesso. Para a sua maior exposição individual institucional até agora na Kunsthalle Basel, Pedro Wirz concebeu um mundo entre o anseio pela natureza e a crença no progresso, entre responsabilidade ecológica e consumo desenfreado. Materiais orgânicos encontraram tecidos industriais, processos artesanais a linguagem visual de um presente tecnologizado. A exposição girou em torno das contradições de uma sociedade que anseia por natureza intocada e, ao mesmo tempo, exige sempre novos produtos, aparelhos e desenvolvimentos.

No centro deste cosmos multifacetado esteve Ovo Espacial: uma obra monumental em lã, com 10,15 × 8 metros. Já o título – o «ovo espacial» – abre um espaço de reflexão entre origem e futuro, espaço de proteção e mundo desconhecido. A obra aparece menos como um tapete clássico e mais como uma paisagem têxtil: macia e corpórea, ao mesmo tempo estranha e de presença quase cósmica.

Pedro Wirz combina no seu trabalho memórias pessoais do tropical Vale do Paraíba no Brasil com ciência natural, folclore e mitologia. As suas obras falam de colonialismo e comércio de matérias-primas, de progresso tecnológico, alterações climáticas e extinção de espécies – mas nunca sob a forma de uma mensagem clara. Antes, surgem espaços enigmáticos onde material, história e imaginação se sobrepõem.

Em Ovo Espacial, a lã torna-se meio artístico e o chão a superfície da imagem. A obra altera a perceção do espaço: é pisada, contornada, experienciada de perto e lida à distância. A sua dimensão confere-lhe uma força escultórica, enquanto a superfície têxtil cria proximidade e intimidade.

Para Ruckstuhl Art Rugs, Ovo Espacial é exemplar de uma forma de colaboração em que a arte não é transferida para o têxtil, mas desenvolvida em conjunto com o material. A Ruckstuhl acompanhou a nova produção para a exposição com o conhecimento e a experiência da sua própria manufatura de tapetes. O resultado é uma obra que se recusa a qualquer leitura puramente funcional: tapete, imagem, paisagem e presença artística autónoma ao mesmo tempo.
